Books 2008

March 11th, 2008

I’ve got a stack of books to read, and many many more that are on my “to-order” list. The following is what I read through during the course of the year:

Awakening the Buddha Within - Lama Surya Das instructs on how to implement Eastern wisdom into your Western life.

Small is the New Big - A collection of marketing thoughts presented alphabetically by Seth Godin.

Franny and Zooey - J.D. Salinger’s second book about the Glass family, this short novel explores the introspection, turmoil and self realization of two siblings.

The 4-Hour Work Week - Timothy Ferriss provides direction on how to break free of the rat race, and enjoy life while you earn more.

Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? - Clinical psychologist Beverly Daniel Tatum takes on race relations and race identity. A thought provoking book for anybody interested in combating racism.

The God Delusion - Atheist Richard Dawkins eloquently presents the case that science can, for all practical terms, prove that God does not exist. A superb read.

The Wealth and Poverty of Nations - David Landis, Emeritus Professor of Economics at Harvard, provides detailed philosophy and argument of the great European leap of the Industrial Revolution, and contributing factors to why so much of the world was left behind. An interesting, but dry read.

A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson puts together a wonderful story of science, capturing such topics as the Big Bang, chemistry, geology, and other natural sciences. Superbly written and fun to read. One of my favorite books in years.

Den of Thieves - James A. Stewart enticingly depicts the misdeeds of the greed driven barons of Wall St. during the 70s and 80s.  The tale of Milken, Boesky, Siegel, Freeman and others is captivating and unforgettable.  I couldn’t put it down.
