Revolt at Digg
May 1st, 2007
The censoring of the super secret DVD hack that was published earlier in the day has gotten Digg users in an absolute uproar. In fact, the backlash has gotten so severe that the homepage of Digg is swarmed with anti-Digg censoring stories. Snapshot here.
I wrote not too long ago that the top users have jumped ship - will this be the straw that sends the rest of the users packing? The revolt is actually humorous - reminds me of the temper tantrums my 5 year old throws.
How do you deal with the crowd once it’s turned on you?
Also interesting to note is that the number of stories submitted by top users continues to decline. See the Friends’ Activity in the previous screenshot.

Having a mob at your disposal is nice, until they decide you are the enemy …

I dugg you down because I don’t see THE NUMBER anywhere on your site.

That site has begun dying for me these past few months with all the “Ron Paul is a national treasure” crap and overly racist comments actually being dug UP. Now with this mob crap, I’m finding a bigger issue with the users themselves than Digg being unable to manage the ever growing number of retards.

A mob, or a bunch of bots and a flash sdk maybe

I have to hope that this revolt moves beyond Digg. A number of people around the web have already been issued CD orders for publishing that hex key. Truth is we shouldn’t be blowing up our best forum for communication. It’s alot like the rioters in LA burning down their own neighborhoods. All those silly people DOS’s digg should be doing be putting the energy into writting their congressmen and spreading the hex key accross every public site that allows them to post. I will of course not include it here out of courtesy.

There is already talk about building a new Digg-like site with no censorship: http://uncensoreddigg.blogspot.com
I think Digg may have really blew it this time.

I hope all the thugs leave Digg. This is an outrage. It’s not a question of free speech.

Digg is so popular because anybody can post anything they considere “news” and have it viewed by others. Something that’s hard to do on other popular “news” sites now a days. So to not only censor but to delete the guys user account has everybody wondering “ok am I gonna be next?” …I don’t blame them either.

Seriously…”like my 5 year old”? Wow, that’s just classy man, real classy. Sorry if we’re having a bit of fun with the backlash, and for god’s sake…looks like your biggest stories come from reporting on Digg itself…kinda pathetic.

I think they are acting like a bunch of spoiled children. Community sites like digg and youtube show so much promise, but we have to ruin it with witch trials such as this.

It’s a case of the patients taking over the asylum. So much for democracy… give me back my republic.

This is why practically every news site / newspaper / news channel has an EDITOR. Ok, you can argue that an editor will not be impartial etc, but without some kind of… order… there is chaos. What will they digg up next? Freedom for middle-class white 20-somethings not to work and sit around all day playing X-Boxes? Hell yeah, Digg it!!

[…] First off Greg is spot on that Digg has been slowly declining, however the homepage was still fairly active, so much so that refreshing the home page after more than a few hours had passed yielded a completely different set of stories. This week I’m seeing a lot less action on how many stories are making the home page. […]

I think Digg peed in its Post Toasties by relenting. Kinda like turning the Asylum over to the inmates.
Only time will tell if it was a smart biz move.

Several days after the DVD incident, it appears to take less diggs to make it to the home page.
Has anyone gotten something on the home page in the past day or two to see if the overall traffic is down from what it was when you had something on the home page previously?
May 12th, 2007 at 4:46 am
I see the same amount of traffic. I don’t think so that there is any decline overall.
