Sheep Throwing, Poking and Other Diversions
December 17th, 2007
So I finally broke down and joined Facebook (link to my profile). I had held off for some time because I just didn’t see any value for me in the platform. But after hearing about it month after month, the curiosity finally got the better of me.
Overall, I think it’s a pretty interesting concept. Staying in touch with friends, helping to plan an event, birthday reminders - all good stuff. I’ve even seen some colleagues make use of it from a business standpoint. In a nutshell, I think Facebook has a promising future, and could prove to be a next-gen search alternative (social graphing is way cool).
However, I’m taking a stand against all the bullshit that goes with the site. What’s the deal with the sheep throwing and gift giving? They’re fake gifts people. Zombie bites? Puhleeze. Pretend drinks? How about inviting me to have a real drink? Probably much better bang for your buck there…
This morning, I had a business associate “poke” me. Somebody I don’t know very well outside of a business relationship. WTF? So now am I supposed to “poke” him back? And then what? He pokes me again, or steps it up to start throwing things at me? Shouldn’t we be working?
Call me weird, but I think it’s all a little, I don’t know, lame. Maybe I’m a bit stuffy, but I have better things to do with my time than screw around with idiotic things on Facebook.
So feel free to friend me. Invite me to your groups. Let me know about any causes you are interested in. Hell, even write on my wall and engage me. Just keep your sheep and your pokes to yourself.

Isn’t that the truth? I cannot stand online nonsense, I delete most forwards before I even look at them. I just don’t have time for it. I mean things like “pokes” “zombie bites” “virtual drinks” etc. are for teeny boppers as far as I am concerned

You are not selling this to me Greg. I am fastidiously resisting the lure of Facebook, and stories of fake gifts and sheep throwing are only helping me decide not to.

Greg - I’m on board with you about the diversions within FB.
The most value comes out of connecting with people you’ve not been able to find for years. I can’t put a price on that.
BUT all the poking and jabbing is silly and wasteful. The gifts and applications are largely a waste of time. It’s about finding the people you really need to get in touch with and holding that close.

Facebook can get out of hand indeed. Tons of applications invaded the platform. Funwall, SuperWall, WonderWall, WonderBar…
In addition to that, the newbies can get tricked to “invite all” their friends to add those applications, which create a wave of frustration. FB should force the applications developers to put a SUPER BIG “SKIP” button, so that people understand that they don’t have to invite their friends for those apps.

I agree a 100%!
I like facebook for it’s fast updates. You don’t have to do anything, still you’ve got a good impression about what your friends are up to.
And you DONT’T HAVE TO talk to them, but when something funny happens to them, you can jump right on top of it.
By the way, Hawaii SEO (if that’s your real name), hilarious article!
